Joanne’s Story
The Liddesdale Farm Sleeping Ghost
Between the ages of 10 and sixteen I lived in an old farmhouse in rural Scotland. It was up a farm
lane just beyond the outskirts of Stranraer. It was in quite a spooky location as it was at the bottom
of "Galla Hill", in the days of hanging the gallows were up this hill. The house was arranged over 3
floors, a semi-basement, 1st. floor and 2nd floor. My bedroom was the only one occupied on the 1st.
floor, the rest of the family's rooms were on the 2nd. floor. From memory I was quite happy in this
room although it was a bit lonely. Unfortunately as I reached my teen years I started to feel very ill
at ease in this room. I began to wake in the night and hear unexplained sounds. I got very scared and
was often going up stairs and waking my parents up.
One night,
w
hen I was about 15 years old, I awoke and noticed that there was "someone " under
the bedclothes in the other twin bed in my room. I got out of bed and stood staring down at their
head, the only part of them that was not covered over. I thought I was either looking at my mum or
my sister's head, as at that time we all had our hair cut in a short style. Although I thought this I
was still very frightened of this body in the bed. I decided to go upstairs to see if my sister was in
her bed, she was! I was wary of disturbing my parents yet again, so I went back to have another look
at the head to see whether I thought it was my mum. The body was still under the covers but there
was still very little to identify it. I had a really bad feeling about it and certainly didn't want to rouse
it. I was too frightened just to go back to bed and sleep, so up the stairs again and this time I did
knock on my parent's bedroom door. Lo and behold my mum was there in her bed, so what was in the
other twin bed in my room? From that night on I slept upstairs and my parents slept in the ghost
room!
